How to cancel Stan Sport in Australia (2026 guide) — including what happened to Optus Sport
Cancel Stan Sport or remove the Sport add-on in two minutes — plus what happened to Optus Sport, why ex-Optus subscribers are now paying full price, and how to cancel it.

If you're here because your Optus Sport subscription quietly turned into a Stan Sport one — and the $9.99 deal you were migrated onto has expired — you're in the right place. Optus Sport shut down on 1 August 2025, the Premier League moved to Stan Sport, and every migrated subscriber's discounted rate ended on 8 January 2026. If you didn't notice, you're now paying full Stan prices.
The good news: cancelling takes two minutes, no exit fees, no lock-in. And because Stan Sport is an add-on rather than a standalone service, you have two exits — remove just the sport, or cancel the whole thing.
First: what happened to Optus Sport?
Quick recap for anyone catching up:
- 1 August 2025: Optus Sport shut down. Optus exited sports broadcasting; Nine (Stan's owner) bought the EPL and FA Cup rights.
- The migration: Optus Sport subscribers were moved across to Stan Premium + Stan Sport for $9.99/month.
- 8 January 2026: the $9.99 migration price ended. Migrated customers moved to standard Stan pricing.
- If you were charged after cancelling Optus Sport: you're not alone — Optus billing errors on cancelled sport services are a known complaint. Check your statements from August 2025 onward, and if Optus charged you after 1 August 2025 for a service that no longer existed, that's a refund conversation with Optus support (or your bank).
And if you subscribed to Stan Sport directly — none of the above applies to you; skip to the steps.
Cancel Stan Sport in 3 steps (browser — works for everyone)
- Go to stan.com.au in a web browser and log in. (Not the app — the Stan apps don't include subscription management. Any browser works, including on your phone.)
- Open your account settings (click your profile icon → Manage Account), then Manage Subscription. From here you can either:
- Remove the Sport add-on — you keep your Stan movies/TV base plan, or
- Cancel Subscription entirely — everything ends.
- Confirm and keep the confirmation. Stan will confirm the change and whether access continues to the end of your billing period. Keep the confirmation email — it's your proof if a charge keeps coming.
No fees, no phone call, no retention maze.
Check how you're billed (one Optus quirk left)
- Billed directly by Stan (card entered on stan.com.au): the steps above work — done.
- Ex-Optus Sport customer: after migration your billing runs through Stan, so cancel on stan.com.au. But check your Optus statements too — if Optus charged you for "sport" after August 2025, chase Optus for that refund separately.
- Billed through Apple, Google Play, or Optus SubHub: if you signed up through an app store or added Stan to your Optus bill via SubHub, Stan's website can't cancel it. Use Settings → your name → Subscriptions (Apple), Payments & subscriptions (Google Play), or the My Optus app (SubHub).
- Not sure? Check your bank statement. "STAN" is direct. "Apple", "Google" or "Optus" means cancel through that channel instead.
The 3 gotchas
-
Sport is an add-on — you may be paying for two things. Stan Sport sits on top of a base Stan plan. If you cancel "Stan" but the add-on was billed separately, or vice versa, check your next statement to confirm both stopped. Removing the Sport add-on keeps your base plan running; cancelling the base plan can take the add-on with it — verify which exit you actually wanted.
-
Cancel just before your renewal date — there's no pro-rata refund. You keep access to the end of your current billing period, but nothing is refunded for the days left in the month. Cancelling the day before renewal means you keep everything you've paid for and pay nothing more. Your next billing date is on the Manage Subscription page — check it first.
-
The EPL off-season is free money. The Premier League runs August to May. If you subscribed for football, June and July are dead months you'd otherwise pay for — roughly $60-$90 for two months depending on your plan. Cancel at the FA Cup final, resubscribe before the August kickoff. Your account and watchlist stay intact.
What it costs while you're deciding
For reference, current Stan pricing in Australia (verified October 2026):
| Component | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic with Ads | $9.99/month | 1 stream, HD, no downloads |
| Standard | $17.99/month | 2 streams, HD |
| Premium | $23.99/month | 4 streams, 4K UHD |
| Stan Sport add-on | +$20/month | On top of any base plan |
The Sport add-on on the cheapest ad-supported base runs $29.99 a month — about $360 a year. If you came from Optus Sport at $9.99 all-in, you're paying roughly triple what you signed up for — which is exactly why "cancel Stan Sport" searches are spiking.
After you cancel
- You keep access until the end of your current billing period — no instant cut-off.
- Your account and watchlist stay intact if you resubscribe (say, for next season).
- Check your next statement to confirm both the base and the add-on stopped. If a charge keeps coming, your confirmation email is the ammunition — support reverses duplicate charges with it.
If this is part of a bigger cleanup — the average Australian runs 4-5 subscriptions and forgets about at least one — the 15-minute statement audit in our spending guide finds the rest of them.
The takeaway
Cancelling Stan Sport is a two-minute browser job: remove the add-on or cancel everything under Manage Subscription, check whether your billing came via Optus SubHub or an app store first, and time it just before renewal. And if you're an ex-Optus Sport subscriber — check what you've actually been paying since January.
